Resumes in today’s job market are no longer mere summaries of one’s work experience (as they were thirty years ago). Rather, they are self-marketing documents that, ideally, demonstrate how your qualifications align perfectly with those requested in a job advertisement. Highlighting qualifications is particularly important because many employers use automated applicant tracking systems that are programmed to search for keyword phrases related to their desired qualifications in their candidates. Here’s how to make your qualifications pop on your resume.
Margins are the first thing a potential employer will notice about your resume, so it’s important that they are appropriately set. One inch margins are the safe bet for applicants that lack experience. If you have a wealth of experience that you are trying to fit to one page then it is acceptable to reduce to the margins. Be cautious when reducing the margins. If they are too small, your pages will look overcrowded.
Objective statements on your resume are a thing of the past (“This is a marketing document, not a Dear Abby letter,” Augustine says). Use a summary statement instead, which is basically just an elevator pitch for why you’re the best person for this job. When it makes sense, change the title on your resume to match how it’s presented in the job listing, Augustine suggests. If the company is looking for a Marketing Communications Director,” and you meet the qualifications, it’s in your best interest to use that title something like “Senior Manager of Marketing and Communications.
